Replacing kick plate on front door (was glued on)

Hi!

I'd like to replace the kick plate on my front door. It was glued on rather than screwed.

Any suggestions on how best to remove the old one w/o ruining the door?

Thanks!!

Not likely you will get it off without a little damage. Run a sharp blade around the perimeter to cut through any glue or caulk on the edge. Use a 5 in 1 tool to pry the old one off. It probably wasn't solidly glued, only sparsely, so it may even pop off once you start putting torque on it. I hope you didn't think you would keep the old one, as it will probably bend taking it off. Once you have it off, scrape off the old glue and sand down the door. Put a good coat of sealer or paint on it and after it dries install the new kick.

Are you sure it's glue? If it's a steel door, kickplates are usually magnetic which are difficult to remove after sometime. Take a good look.

Thanks for both replies!!

I'm not positive it's glue - just assumed so.... will see if I can tell and then decide what to do -- thanks!!

Well, just to add to the mix, I think I've seen self adhesive plates as well. You know, peel and stick?
