Egress window building code requirements

Can someone tell me what the PA building code requires for an egress window for a second floor bedroom? I need the maximum heighth of the sill from the floor, the width of the egress window, the heighth of the egress window and the total square footage.

Your local building code office should be able to provide you with code requirements. Codes tend to vary from area to area. Any changes to structure will require a permit.

The height above the floor is a maximum of 42". I do not recall what the width and height of the opening are. Call your local window dealer(not Home Depot), they will know the other dimensions.

Spiral Springs broke on double hung window

:( Bad situation: both spiral springs seemed to have popped out of the double hung window. I call it spiral because they spin when window goes up and down. Now the window just fall down when you unlock it. (top hung spirals broken) Please help!! Thanks!!Read More

Fix windows.. How?

I just moved into a new home and am having some problems with my windows, which I believe are single hung. The majority of windows have problems and, unfortunately, the company that made these windows went out of business years ago.. I had a window guy come take a look and he found the following types of problems with the windows: - The bottom section of the window opens out and the plastic pieces that hold them in the frame are broken. This means when I open the window some, a strong gust of wind will blow the bottom section right off. - Tension Springs need to be replaced - Windows need to be re-balanced, as many don't close right. - Windows need to be lubricated, so they are easier to move up and down. The window guy did say the windows were in good condition and there was no need for replacing them. He also said replacing would be expensive, since the windows were installed underneath the outside siding (for example, some siding might break and would need to be replaced). The number he quoted me to fix the windows was quite high, so I'd like to repair them if at all possible myself... My questions for all of you are: 1. Are there any good guides that can help me figure out how to do the repairs myself? Can you guys give me any good pointers on doing this work? I'm pretty handy around the house, but have never done anything with windows before. 2. Where could I buy parts for the windows? Will home depot / lowes most likely have parts?
