Fix windows.. How?
I just moved into a new home and am having some problems with my windows, which I believe are single hung. The majority of windows have problems and, unfortunately, the company that made these windows went out of business years ago.. I had a window guy come take a look and he found the following types of problems with the windows:
- The bottom section of the window opens out and the plastic pieces that hold them in the frame are broken. This means when I open the window some, a strong gust of wind will blow the bottom section right off.
- Tension Springs need to be replaced
- Windows need to be re-balanced, as many don't close right.
- Windows need to be lubricated, so they are easier to move up and down.
The window guy did say the windows were in good condition and there was no need for replacing them. He also said replacing would be expensive, since the windows were installed underneath the outside siding (for example, some siding might break and would need to be replaced). The number he quoted me to fix the windows was quite high, so I'd like to repair them if at all possible myself...
My questions for all of you are:
1. Are there any good guides that can help me figure out how to do the repairs myself? Can you guys give me any good pointers on doing this work? I'm pretty handy around the house, but have never done anything with windows before.
2. Where could I buy parts for the windows? Will home depot / lowes most likely have parts? From what I've been told about these windows, is that they are very standard stock home windows (they are the originals).
Thanks for any help in advance!!!

Heres a couple of sites Tom...second one has some info pages on repair and replacement.
Both sell parts. Just have to try and match up what you have. They have both been very helpful to me in the past.
https://www.blainewindow.com/
http://www.swisco.com/
Doubtfull on the HD/Lowes thing, unless it was a brand they sold. Might check with a building materials supplier or a local wholesale window distributer.
