Can I replace the door weatherstripping?

We have double doors in our garage. The dogs have ripped the weatherstripping in between the 2 doors. I cannot find the make of the door.

Can the weatherstripping be replaced? I think the whole white plastic piece would be replaced with the new black weatherstripping already in it.

I have posted a picture. Hope it helps.

Any help would be appreciated.

Pics not really clear as to what is there. Look s like stick on foam. But have you checked big box stores for generic replacements?? Lowes seems to have a better selection.

The stick on foam was me just trying to fix it up for last winter. The dogs again have ripped that off. It is a black weatherstripping that is part of the white piece of plastic.

I could be seeing your pics wrong but:

When you say double doors do you mean garage doors or more like a regular residential door? The pics look like residential doors with a regular door latch on it.

If it is then the weatherstripping looks to me like what is commonly known as "jam up" which is a rigid plastic or sometimes metal stripping with a rubber edge that the door closes up against to form the seal.

That type of weatherstripping is easy to find and commonly sold at hardware stores etc. You'd have to pry the old set off to replace it.It is normally tacked on with small nails or sometimes small screws.

Now if the door are not wood or wood core then I'm not sure regular jam up would work. You might have to find a direct replacement if it has to fit into a groove made in the door or similar design.

Again it's a bit hard to tell from the pics but the door kits (jam up) might just work.Note that jam up is slang and not really what the product is actually called.

I believe you are right. It is a plastic piece that the door closes against. It is a metal door and does have a place that it seems this plastic piece slides into. I have tried to find a way to remove it without success.

It may be the only way to get the strips off is by pulling it out from the end. This would probably mean taking the door down although you might see if you can do it with just the door being open.

Only way to find out is climb up on a ladder with the door open and see if it looks like these peices would slide out from the top or if by removing a part at the top the strips would then slide out.

Also you could take a mirror and check the bottom.

Next question would be if you have room to remove them from the top without taking the door down.Otherwise you'll have no choice.Hopefully it's on hinges that have a removeable pin.

Trying to remember...trying to remember...hmmmm...darn brain!

These doors have slide bolts at the top and bottom of the "passive" door, right? That lock into the frame and the sill to hold it closed? Are the parts that you push to slide the bolts into position plastic or metal? I think if you extend the bolts, you may see how the cover on the edge of the door is attached to the "T-astragal" (the part that attaches to the passive door and the active door closes against). That may allow you to see the weatherstrip better or how the astragal is attached to the door.

Wish we had a bit diff view in the pics.

Hmm, no deadbolt on the door? Just a single knob?

Yes they have a metal piece at the top and bottom to hold/lock that door in place.

We would have enough room in the garage to slide the piece off, the other night we were on the ladder trying to see if it would slide with no luck.

I'll slide up the metal bolt and see if that helps to see anything.

If you find that the stripping or the part of the door it fits into is criped or bent at the ends you may have to "unbend" it to get the stripping out.Sometimes the factory does this to prevent slipping.

Today I took down the door to get a better look. I was able to just pull towards me and remove just the black weatherstripping. Went to HD and got a new generic replacement for $4. Finally something easy and cheap to fix.
