how to install pre-hung door in a stairway?

Hi guys,

I'm wondering if there's an easy way to put a pre-hung door in a stairway. Will I actually have to cut out the drywall first? Or can I just attach the door to the studs through the existing drywall? Thanks a lot!

The bottom line is whether or not you have room for the door. Do you need to add additional studs to make a wide opening smaller for your door? In that case, you might be able to just glue and screw a studs onto each side of the opening without removing drywall.

If you think the opening is already the right size, and that you are just going to shim the new door into the opening, the potential problem might be that there is nothing to nail to behind the drywall! In which case, you might want to open up the wall and add some framing which will both secure the cut edge of the drywall and give your door something solid to attach to.

ok thanks.
My opening is 35" wide, so plenty of space to add additional studs. I'm installing the door at the top of the stairs, so there should be studs there behind the drywall already. Thank you very much for your help.
