HELP !--- enlarging a window

we have a window in our ding room and its 32 x 50, we want it to be 36 x 52 or 36 x 54 . we were told it would cost us 500 bucks for labor and material(not counting the window). they said something about needing another header because we are going wider? what is a header? what is it made of and what is it for?
thank you guys

The header is the framing above the window that supports the structure above the window, and expanding a window opening can be expensive. Yes, the opening does need a new header, after tearing out the existing framing and wall covering inside/out.

Taser - I think $500 labor and material is probably a bargain. In addition to the window, they will have to provide flashing, trim, a new header and framiing lumber. Depending on the type of header they use, materials may cost $100 or more.
