Casements or double hung?
We are planning to make our screened-in porch weathertight with good windows. 7 openings are 42"x69" and 3 are 34"x69". We were planning on the larger windows being casements and the smaller 3 being picture windows (not need to open those). One installer asked if we had considered double hung windows. Are there any issues with having a double hung window this large?

No issue I've run into. We've installed double hungs that wide in several homes, I'm unsure on the height though. In my opinion it depends a lot on what type windows your house has.

You'll be paying a ton for casements over 36" IF you can find them. Moving casements that size would cause a ton of problems.
DH windows that large are not near the issue, but your sightlines will be compromised, depending on the usage.

In the same vein, have you considered sliders? I have installed both casements and sliders on porch remodels (next door to each other as a matter of fact), and they both work well. The weight of the windows is reduced for installation by removing the casements or movable segments prior to installation, especially on the second floor off the side of a mountain. Like GG, I think DH windows will compromise your field of view.

You can order sliders in just about any size you want, BUT, be aware of the pitfalls....within 24" of the floor (some locales differ) you will need tempered glass ($), and they are heavy, so the tracking system must be stout to handle the window. A good quality window will be a must.

Hi slickracer, all good comments here, but wanted to add. Depending upon your roof overhang, double hung windows can sometimes allow you to open them a bit at the top on a rainy day. I've had sliders, casement, and doubles and doubles are the only ones you can leave open (at the top) and not get wet. My two cents.
