How do I replace wood surrounding ext. windows?

Hi, I have a vinyle-sided house that has wood boards surrounding each window. It is a rough-cut board, my home inspector said it was spruce. Anyway, some of it is rotting and I want to replace it. Is this a DIY project? I'm unsure of exactly what I need to do to replace bad boards. Not sure if I need some type of flashing under the boards or what. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'm no expert but just did one on my house that was the same way. I just removed the boards going around the window and bought some hardiplanks and ripped them to size, installed some roofing paper so there isn't any contact between the old wood siding on my house and the hardiplank as its fiber cement. (my house has wood siding coved with vinyl siding also)

Don't know if its right but its better than it was.... Oh also I went a re-taped the nailing flange around the vinyl windows also while I was at it. It wasn't taped but silcone before.
