Drywalling over existing window

We have a window in our kitchen we want to close up. We want to take the window out and drywall the area. What steps must we take to do this? The frame will be there when we take the window out, so do we just frame across the opening and then what?

Thanks

The entire window needs to come out, sashes, interior and exterior trim, and the window frame itself. You want to get right down to the framing. Cut and install new 2x4 or 2x6 pieces (depending on wall thickness) around all four sides of the opening. Add additional short stud pieces 16" oc., insulate and install sheathing on the outside, sheetrock inside. Patching your siding is usually the hardest part depending on what you've got.

Window closing up

We have vinyl siding on our house, but we are lucky we are removing another windowremoved in our bedroom and having a set of french doors put in so we were planning on using the siding they remove for the french door to put over the other olde window opening we are closing up in the kitchen. I am not sure if we will have enough vinyl siding from the where the french doors are going but we have no idea what else we could use on the outside wall in the kitchen.
My husband asked me to ask about a "vapour barrier"?

Thanks

Use Tyvek under the siding.
