old door/new opening
hanging an old exterior door in a new opening. i ripped the jambs out of 2x6's and shimmed them so they are plumb. when i hung the door this morning using the old hinges the bottom of the door meets the jamb when closing and makes it a bit hard to close door all the way. what gives? as i said the jamb is plumb. does this mean the door was tampered with at some point and is not square? what's the easiest fix? thanks.

Certainly a possibility. Easy to check. 1. Measure side to side at 3 places, 2.top to bottom 3 places, 3. diagonally both ways.
1-all dimensions should be equal
2- "
3- "
If 1, 2 are OK but 3 is not, door is out of square.
If 1 or 2 not equal, door has been planed at some point.

Did you mortise the hinges into the new jamb? Check depth of mortise. Is jamb bowed in at the bottom?

the door indeed was almost a quarter inch wider at the bottom than top half and i think i did mortise that bottom hinge too deeply. doors are a pain in the *ss. it shuts fine now after some planing and cajoling but when i step back in the inside and look at it compared to the door jamb it is crooked as heck. i can live with that. it's just a workshop/studio...
