Attaching boards to outside of exterior steel door?

I want to replace an existing door on our barn (some 1X10s with a couple of cross braces) with a proper exterior steel door. However, my wife doesn't like the look of a steel door. I'd rather not spend the money for a fiberglass door, so here's my question. What about attaching the boards from the old door to the outside of the new steel door with screws or would this ruin the new door?

Any other ideas?

The door would last longer without adding the wood. How about faux painting a wood grain on the door? I'm not overly fond of faux painting on the exterior because the elements will ruin the finish sooner or later but it can be redone and maybe by that time she might be fine with just painting the door to either blend in or complement the barn color.
