Andersen double pane window?

Hi,
Has anyone ever read or heard of double pane windows breaking on their own? The glass inside my house broke and the one facing outside did not. Everyone in the house said they did not break it. Please help if you can thanks.

Yes, maybe the same gremlin visited your house that got mine. Curtains, plastic film, or anything that can concentrate solar energy can also break a window. Just audited a home and the owner said he had cut to fit 2" foam panels to insulate on the inside. Southern exposure and one broke.

If the window is relatively new the mfg may take care of it.

You can let the family out of the closet now

Stress cracks are not uncommon. The happen when there is a flaw on the edge of the glass. They usually occur within the first couple years. When it breaks it makes a pretty loud snap. Almost always it will be one line of breakage from edge of glass to another edge of glass, without any impact site. If there is a spiderweb like break then somebody in your house is lying and it was caused by impact.

I have to tell the story of the time I went to repair a "stress crack". The man was very insistent that it was a stess crack therefore under warranty. Upon arrival, I informed him that "I'm sorry, but this is not a stress crack, and it was caused by a BB gun". He wanted to know how I could possibly know the difference between the two. I then pointed to the BB which was still in between the two panes of glass.

Andersen warrants their glass for 10 years after the purchase date. They also have a really good service department. ( or so I've been told ) The might even send out somebody to fix it for you. Even if it is not under warranty you can still get repacement parts for it.

Andersen warrants the glass for 20 yrs. And as suggested above, stress cracks are not uncommon. That is one reason for the long warranty.

Psyco girlfriends are the best..until they burn your house down.

Realistically...stress fractures normally occur pretty soon after install...unless its new contruction which settles later.

Still worth getting the info in the corner of the window and calling Andersen about a replacement. That customer satisfaction thing, ya know?

Yes I agree the windows were installed in 1988. I missed the 20 year warranty.

The little triangle in the corner of the glass has info on it. Give that to Andersen, they might surprise you.

had exploding windows!

over the past 3 years, 4 of my double pane windows shattered on the inside by themselves. It sounded like a gun shot.

I got the glass replaced at a local place - was a pain to do because they are about 20 years old.

I suspect it's temp changes stressing the glass - does glass weaken over time? It's not the seals because none showed moisture between the panes (or shall I say "pains").

Glass does not weaken with age. You said " windows shattered on the inside by themselves. It sounded like a gun shot". It sounds to me that the glass was tempered. Did it break in to a million pieces? Tempered glass can break by itself and it will sound like a pop.
