Backset measurement

I want to add a deadbolt to a door. The instructions talk about choosing the backset either 2 3/8" or 2 3/4". What difference does it make?

The backset is the distance between the door edge and the center of the keyhole

Residential is usually 2-3/8 and commercial 2-3/4

But new residential is mostly going commercial.

scotty...it shouldn't make much difference, except visually. Most folks would want the deadbolt lined up with the knob.

If this is an exterior or solid wood door, should be no problem. If its an interior hollow door, there may be no interior locking block (solid wood in the area of the lock) installed other than the one for the doorknob.

Don't know why the manufacturers try to save $.02 and not fill the whole area with wood..but they do.
