How to replace window
I have an opening in my kitchen wall that measures 35" w x 24" h. There is a piece of framed glass on the inside & a piece of glass screwed into the outside. We would like to replace this with an actual stationary energy efficient window. This opening is right above my stove & when the sun shines, I cannot read the oven controls, SO I also want to put something there that might obscure the bright sun, but not block it completely. Window film is not an option as the heat from the stove/oven will not allow it to stay in place. Thanks in advance for the ideas. Jina

Jina: is the opening cased and trimmed? If so, you may be able to locate a replacement window in that size and just put it in the opening and add an external sill plate. About the only option you would have for sun control would be shades or blinds. You may have to check around at places like Jeld Wen, Pella, Andersen and others to locate the window you could use in that application. Let us know if we can help further.

You have a several options. Almost any window company should be able to offer you a tinted window. The glass is dark, like sunglasses. You’ll still get some light, but nowhere near as much. This glass is tinted during manufacturing, so it shouldn’t have the same problems as a window film.
You could also choose a replacement window with privacy glass or decorative glass pattern. This will block some of the light, too, and you might find a nice pattern that matches your kitchen.
The newest innovation for windows is energy efficient solar control glass that blocks the glare, heat, and damaging UV rays from getting through. They let in more light than standard tinted windows, but they make it much less harsh. Andersen SmartSun is one brand, and some other companies are offering them, too.
