Help with staining please---

We are going to have oak casing installed around our windows and we want to stain them.
question, does casing need to be polyurethaned after staining?
what if we decide we want to change colors or paint it?

Yes, three coats of polyurethane over the stain would be my plan. Change color? You can strip the finish and start over down the road. Paint? Why would you paint a beautiful wood like oak?

... I would add, sand and remove dust between coats of poly.

To paint over sealed oak you would need to sand and then apply a coat of a solvent based primer but oak is pretty expensive to cover with paint
