sliding door header
I am installing sliding doors and Im not sure how big a header I need 2by8 2by10 or 2by 12, Its a story and a half house, the slider is 72by80 Im out of city limits so no inspection but I want it right. I just dont want to go with 2by12 unless needed. and when I cut out studs how much temporary bracing do I need on the inside and how close to the hole does it need to be. thanx

Here's a site for header size, just pick the center support wall- or not, and the building's span. Temporary support 2' in from the door, with a carpet scrap on a 4x4 against the ceiling and 4 spaced studs on a 2x4 on carpet scrap. Screw the studs, top and bottom, after springing them in for a tight fit by cutting them a 1/2" long.

jackstud?
Thanks for the websit, but what does the chart mean by center-bearing floor, My house is only 24' wide on this side and has a center wall only a foot from the edge of where one side of the new door will be. also im not fluent in carpentry jargon what is a jack stud. I was planning on two vertical 2by4s on one side and a 4by4 on the other side under the header. It looks like 2by10s will do it its a 6ft span. thanks for the help Ive got the drywall out and hope to get it ready to put in this weekend.
