Garage Door Gap
Looking for help here on how to fix this without another service call.... I have a garage door that has a gap on one side. This happened before when one of the cables connecting the torsion spring broke. A service call fixed that, door closed flat. Now about 3 months later, gap again, springs and cables are still intact. The floor is level, and you can see the door is out of skew at the top of the door (same side) as the bottom. What can I do instead of yet another service call, and $150 out pf my pocket?

If the door is sitting at an angle, you can tighten up on the cable on the side that is the lowest. You should be able to do this yourself and without a service call, although if you paid for a service and it is doing the same thing 3 months later, something is wrong and the service company should help find it, since they charged you for the same thing.

Unless you know how torsion springs work, I would not recommend adjusting them as a DIY job. I agree with Chandler that something may not have been done right, but after 3 mos. the company may not look at this as a callback and will charge you again. I don't agree with it, but that is what they do. That said, squeaky wheels get greased, often for nothing. Complain to the management. There is likely something the last guy overlooked, it happens to all of us at times.

Thanks Bill, I missed the all important words "torsion spring", thinking of the cable only. Don't attempt to adjust the torsion springs. If the door is a big name brand, you can start your squeaking at that level, too, if the local guys don't cooperate.
