Smooth frayed edges of aluminum screening, solder won't "stick"

I made a dish with an aluminum screen as a filter since there's nothing like it in the kitchenware stores. The problem is that after I trimmed the outer edges of the aluminum screening, there are these frayed ends which are sharp. I tried to solder them to the metal dish but the solder just falls off the aluminum screening. Any other way to deal with the frayed edges?

TIA,

-MC

Is there a caulk that has a grey or silver finish since both pieces are metal and the white or clear caulk would look bad?

If you go that route, use aluminum silicone.
