Mortise Lockset HELP ME PLEASE!!!

Our front door has a 1920's Yale Mortise Lockset. The interior spindle has sheared off leaving about 1/2" left. Can anyone tell me how to remove the spindle so I can replace it? I have removed everything that I can see, but I can't remove the lockset because the spindle seems to be the only impediment to overcome. The spindle itself consists of a split square of threaded stock of about 5/16". Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

What's on the exterior side? Is there a knob with a set screw? If there is, remove that too. Can you post a couple pics?

The spindle is split. I was able to extract it by pushing one half in towards the interior. I can see no method that kept the spindle halves snug inside the mechanism, but I assume at one time there was some sort of shim that kept enough pressure outward to keep the spindle in place, and not just have the knob pull out.
I'll try to get a few pictures of the whole shebang and post them tomorrow when I get back from work. What really has me stumped is how to replace the broken spindle. I have cleared the knob by judicious use of a drill press, and was able to avoid damaging the threads. I guess that I can jury rig a solid spindle and shim it with a soft metal. I have a good amount of copper sheet, and I'll hammer down a piece for a shim. What I need to source if possible would be a schematic of what the lockset is SUPPOSED to look like...
I really do appreciate your response. I was really in a panic for a while.

OK. Once again I am stumped. I have been unable to find a split spindle anything like what came out of this lockset. The spindle consists of two pieces, as if you took a standard 20 tpi spindle and cut it straight down the length. These two pieces are 2 1/8" long. One of the pieces has a 30 degree bend at the very end, obviously to keep it in place and provide resistance for the pull knob.
I've spent hours upon hours (I didn't go to sleep, just searched the web all night) trying to find anything like this set-up. All I have been able to find are solid, one piece spindles. I would like to replace this broken spindle with the same type of set-up, but I'm striking out. Does anyone have a clue as to what I have on my hands, and any possible work arounds or ideas?

Is that the spindle. Did you try to take some pics & upload them to photobucket?

I just fixed my baldwin mortise lock which has (probably identical) split square spindle. you could try to look at baldwin mortise lock parts. Also posting your question in the locks forum might help
