replacement window question

I have 30 year old double hung windows looking to replace with vinyl replacements. The problem is I have only 3" space between outside stop and inside stool. All manufactures I have looked at need at least 3 1/4" sill depth. I had couple ideas and was looking for recommendations. One was to tear/cut out outside stop and replace with new trim. Second was to pull stool and rip down 1/4" to gain depth needed for window sill.
Thanks

mgs2253,

Welcome to the forums.

Either way would work, but replacing the outside stop would be easier.

Actually most replacement windows need 3 1/2", but if you replace it from outside, none of the inside needs to be touched, and usually the outside is wrapped with aluminum. So all is covered up. If the space is actually 3 1/2, removing the inside stop is all that is needed.

Check the manufacturer, hopefully not from big box, they may make what you need as an option.

We are facing this same question in our sunroom and are leaning toward adding trim on the inside to cover up the difference in depth. Not sure yet until we get there, but for what it's worth! I think it's really personal preference and which look you prefer.

Allison1888,

Add trim inside or add it outside -- whichever you prefer the looks of. The most important thing is to get them sealed on the outside so that they don't leak.
