Broken window latch

I have a Pella house window (probably 40 years old) which won't open. I can slide a putty knife around it except for the area behind the lock. I took out the screws on the lock and I think the spring which pushes the lock into the upper window is broken. The lock will not come off. How can I get this lock off to replace it?

Start with a utility knife with a new blade. Try to cut through the top of the lock itself to expose the spring. If that doesn't work, try a gig saw.

Thank you very much for your reply. I got out my tools to begin and discovered that I could take off the inner pane of the top window to make more room for sawing. This exposed the screws holding in the strike plate in the top window. Once I removed those the entire lock mechanism could be easily removed. I was correct that the latch was stuck locked into the strike plate. I had already talked to a local hardware store and the local Pella store who could not help me. Thank you for getting me on the right track!
