Window frame popping/cracking noise

Hello everyone, I've got a problem with an upstairs bedroom window. Our house is 28 years old, we've lived here for 11. Never had this problem before this past June. Our upstairs bedroom window creates a very loud popping or cracking noise between 9am and 11am every morning. It is loud enough to wake us up. The window faces east and the sun starts hitting it around this time. The noise occurs every 2-3 minutes or so to start, then lessens to ever 10 minutes for the remainder. If I press on or squeeze the frame from inside the sound is less but it still occurs.
Short of new windows is there anything I can do? I find it odd that it just started happening this year, after 25+ years of nothing.
Thanks,
Karen

Vinyl siding usually makes those kinds of sounds when the sun hits it in the morning. If the siding is butted tight to the window, you are probably hearing that sound being telegraphed through the window.

expansion and contraction

Hey Karen, my name is George and I work for a Chicago area Home Depot. In my opinion the sound you are hearing every morning it is from expansion and contraction. Over night it gets cold and in the morning when sun hits the window things start to warm up and expand. I think the noise you are hearing it is from a lose window component. I would thoroughly inspect the window frame and look for the loose screws that attach your window frame to the wall stud. If you find some… and I think you will, replace them with same but slightly longer screws. Hope that helps and good luck with your project.

Thumbs up Slider makes popping noise

I also hear a popping noise in a newly installed slider patio door. At around 50 degrees (no more of those days here in MN), there's an audible POP, as if something's shifting, typically toward the end of the day. It's newly installed door, and I was able to watch the install process and I know they did an excellent job, replacing some rotten wood, etc. I think this is just something that I'm going to have to live with, seeing trying to fix this issue will almost certainly require removing all the trim and reseating the entire slider frame... Sorry to hear that you hear these noises too.

Now, the real question should be, why are you still in bed between 9 and 11am?
