Making a short door longer

We made our attic into a living space, and we'd like to replace the door at the bottom of the staircase. We now have a solid door that opens into a hallway, and we want to replace that with two narrow french doors. The opening is just short of 80 inches tall. It's really expensive to have doors made. I found a pair of antique doors that are a bit wide, but that I'm thinking we can plane or cut down the width.

The real problem is that they are five inches short. If we are likely to paint the doors, can we extend them--that is, add a five inch board to the bottom and make it fit and have the doors look normal?

Close the door opening. Add 2-2x4's to the top door plate to add 3" plus the trim should make it 3/1/2".

Mike, now they are still short. I would not close up an 80" "standard" opening to accommodate too short doors. You will be bringing the opening just over 6', and that isn't tall enough. Find the right doors, don't modify your house.
