Doorknob/latch installation question
I just installed four new prehung 6-panel interior doors and the latch plates (not sure what they're called) I installed protrude from the door, which causes the plates to rub against the striker plate (plate attached to door frame). It appears that the recessed area (mortise?) on the edge of the door isn't deep enough. As a quick fix, I removed the backplate and just installed the finish plate, which is now flush with the door. However, now the latch is a bit loose, but still works. What's the deal? Why isn't the mortise deeper to accomodate the approx. 1/8" thick, 2-piece latch plate?

The actually latch is loose. I am able to move it a bit in either direction (clockwise/counterclockwise), but the door still latches closed. I'm sure it's fine.
