Replacing older Vinyl Windows with newer Vinyl Windows ?
Hi,
I live in an older home that had Vinyl replacement windows installed probably 15-20 yrs or so ago. They are showing their age - fogging up, showing condensation, sticking, lose fitting and drafty.
I have installed replacement vinyl windows in the past with my father in law and feel confident in my ability to install new ones. But I question whether or not I need to have someone come out to recap the outsides of the windows if I am essentially just yanking out and puting in a vinyl window of the same size. I am assuming I would be able to leave the existing capping and just re-caulk when its all said and done.
I quess what I'm questioning is whether or not that would be naive of me to think I can get away without recapping. If I'm going to have to pay someone to re-cap the exterior than it would defeat any savings I would have by replacing them myself.
Thanks
June

IMO, 20 yr old cladding is probably ready to be replaced. If you can find a metal break to rent or borrow, I'm sure you could learn how to DIY.

With the window capping being weathered and aged there will be a color difference between the new vinyl window and old capping. If you can live with that then there is nothing wrong with leaving it. Iv'e changed many windows without replacing the old capping for customers looking to save a few $$.
Just be sure to cut the caulking between the old window and capping with a utility knife before yanking the window out. It will help you not damage the capping.
