header size for pocket doors

how would you size a header for pocket doors?

Do I count the pocket where the door slides into as part of the opening?

Yes, the header has to include the pocket portion of the doorway. I am assuming this is a load bearing wall??? If it it not, a large header is not needed.

actually it's not a load bearing wall. so this 32" wide door may not actuallly need a 4x8 beam? only a 4x4 all the way across?

I would use a minimum of a double 2x6.

Double 2x6. You don't want to introduce pressure treated lumber into the mix. It will warp, check and twist with you.
