Ball catch, drive in kind in door~the ball came out

The ball popped out of the ball catch and will not stay in. Ordered a new one and the 'frame' that the spring and ball are mounted in is driven into the top of the door...How do you get it out without tearing up the door? AND how do you get it out without breaking it?

Assuming that yours has a small flange or lip surrounding the ball (which covers the edge of the hole), you would take two small putty knives (or two sharp chisels) and tap them underneath that lip, so that you have one on one side of the ball and one on the opposite side of the ball. You'd then pry downward, which should start to lift the drive-in ball catch out. If that doesn't work, you could drill a small hole into the bottom of the ball catch (3/32) then drive a long screw into that hole, and hook the claw of a hammer on that screw head to lift the entire assembly out of the bore.

I understand not wanting to damage the door, but if the old one is broken why do you worry about getting the old one out without ruining it? It's probably junk anyway.
