Door stopper - Heavy door?

Hello,

I'm currently at my fathers apartment. I'm trying to figure out how come his door has so much resistance. He is considered handicapped and issues with his nerves / muscles. He has a surface mounted door stopper and I read that it does provide some resistance. Is this only as the door is closing or when it is also opening? It feels like the door itself just might be heavy. Any insight? I took off the cover of the door stopper and have adjusted the screws on the side and the only difference seems to be the speed at which the door closes. No noticeable difference in the resistance when opening the door.

Any insight would be very helpful thanks.

You mean the door has a surface mounted hydraulic closer? It is likely a gypsum filled fire door, and yes, they are VERY heavy doors. With the closer on there you likely cannot adjust the resistance when the door is pushed open.
