How do I take this glass doorknob apart?

I've read several threads here and elsewhere with interest, but haven't found the solution to my problem.

I have several of these doorknobs in my house, plus two I bought today to replace nonmatching knobs:

There are no screws, no exposed tabs. They do not unscrew if you hold the base still. On one semi-disassembled one, I DID see a potential release tab on the shaft, but there isn't enough space to get a paperclip or even a thin piece of metal down between the shaft and sleeve to press the tab and perhaps release the knob from the rest of the mechanism.

So: does anyone know how I can get these knobs off?

Thanks!

That is not and OLD door knob, maybe 30-50 yrs. Not sure why you want to get the knob off. If you want the glass knob out, replace the lockset.

Thanks for your response, Bill.

I want to get the knob off so I can replace another doorknob in my home with it.

I'm not sure what you mean by "replace the lockset." Could you explain?
