painting a door

I have an outside door on the front of my house that is painted brown from the factory and I want to paint it black, any suggestions, I don't want it to peel and scratch off.

A metal door with a factory finish? Is the brown dark? Will black make the door get hotter in the sun?

As far as painting goes; sand with 220 grit, wipe the door down with a liquid deglosser and apply a coat or two of a quality exterior latex enamel.

It is a metal door with factory finish, well actually about a 3" frame around a glass insert. It may make it a little hotter but it only gets sun for the first part of the morning, this is an old house that had brown trim and we've changed that to black, the prob is the door and the gutters are brown...Is that applied with a brush or sprayed on?

Spraying will give the nicest looking finish although a decent looking job can be had using a brush. Make sure the gutters/downspouts are clean [and rinsed well] before applying paint.

Ok I could pressure wash the downspouts. One more question, I have a low pressure air spray gun, I've seen them used alot with stains but never for paint, can you use them for paint?

What type of low pressure gun?

It should spray thinned oil base paint ok, might not work with latex.

Whenever you use a conventional cup gun to spray paint - it needs to be thinned. Not a big deal with solvent based coatings. The biggest issue when using them for latex paint is the air coming out of the tip causes the paint to dry at the tip. Once the paint starts to build up it affects how it will spray forcing you to clean the tip before continuing.
