Bifold Doors...opening too tall.

Anyone have any suggestions on the best way to make this opening a little bit smaller to accommodate a standard 79" bifold door? The opening is exactly 48" wide and 84" tall. See photos:

I'd probably inset the doors in far enough that you could put up a couple 2x4's flat, then a jamb on top, and a piece of face trim or possibly crown moulding.

Jim welcome to the forums! Yeah, but you won't like it. Install a pair of 2x4's flat sort of like a header across the opening at the top, set back 9/16" from the edge of the sheetrock, then apply sheetrock to the face, bottom and back of the header. Finish the sheetrock on all sides and paint so it looks like the room. Install a 1x4 across the header to attach your hardware to for the doors. You now have 84"-3"-.5"-.75", or 79 3/4" opening.

Brant types faster and in shorter sentences...not fair.

Thanks for the replies so far...The instructions on the doors recommend a 80 3/4" opening...but my closet openings in my bedroom are 82" high and those are accommodating a standard 79" bifold. I was thinking of just doing the sheetrock option, but what are your thoughts on doing the 2 stacked 2x4 option with 1x4 top jamb, and then putting a 1x4 on the face of the 2x4's, and then putting trip around hiding the gaps. I would install the 2x4's sunken in the with of the 1x4 face. Something like this...then staining the doors and wood/trim on top the same color.

I wouldn't see a problem with that. I was just trying to keep the architecture the same. If you're ok with the stained header, who are we to cross you??

Just build it down to where your final piece is the height you want.

Larry... that's the first time anyone ever accused me of typing a short reply. LOL

You were thinking drywall, and I was thinking trim. We had both options covered!
