Door question?

I have a rough opening of 30 x 80. What size should I special order the door? It's an outside door on the side of the house.

28 x 78?

Thanks David

Welcome to the forums! Technically, yes. HOWEVER, you can install a 2-4 x 6-8 standard door and may only have to cut off the bottom of the frame and a little off the door. I am assuming this is an interior door being so small. Using a stock door would be much cheaper.

Can you increase the size of the opening?

Thanks for the replies!

Well I was hoping to special order it a just slide it in. I am just not sure what size to tell them to make it for a 30x80 opening. It looks like standard allows around 2 inches meaning I would have to order it 28x78.

I just don't want to goof up and order the wrong size. :NO NO NO:

Just to be clear...what kind of door do you plan to order? Assuming it will be a pre-hung solid core?

Those will take a lot of preparation (painting, sealing, etc) for them to last in an exterior application.

Also.....don't tell them the size of the door you need, tell them the size of the opening...make them figure it out. That way if it doesn't work....it's their problem.

Good point on not telling them the size - Thanks! The door is actually a metal door with half window.

So I should just say I want to order a door to fit a 30x80 opening?

Tell them you need a prehung unit that will fit in your opening. If you tell them you just want a door to fit that opening, you won't have room for the jamb.

That's not going to be a big door, do you anticipate carrying things through it? If so, I would see about enlarging the opening.

I don't think you will find a 28" metal door. If you do it will be pretty expensive. When I sold doors and windows...they could adjust the height of the standard widths (36", 34", 32", 30") by cutting the bottom and adding an external sweep, but they would not do custom widths.

Just checking online at Menards, they do sell 28x78 steel exterior doors for mobile homes, which would fit your rough opening, but they do not have a window. To get a window I believe you would need to get a standard width (30" would be the smallest).

Thanks everyone for all the help!!! Look like I am going to open it up to use a standard size. It's cheaper to do that way.

Thanks again!! Love the site....
