window glazing

how do I glaze a window that is installed with a metal frame and springs without actually having to climb a ladder to the second story (terrified of heights)

This one is pretty easy, you hire someone that is not afraid of heights. I know that is a simplistic answer and not in keeping with DIY but if you need to use a ladder to get to the window...

Unless the sash can be removed to the inside...sounds like a hire out job.

When I read metal frames with springs I immediately thought of the old generating station where I worked. The springs hold the glass in place instead of glazing points. Of course that old dump was a bit different because the glass was all inserted from the inside of the building. Otherwise it would have been necessary to have a ladder at least 75 feet tall.

I'd say the same thing as Vic. If the window opens, you should be able to remove the sash somehow and then place it on a bench to work on it.

Can't tell you how to remove it with no pictures and a better description though.

In picture one, there is a wooden "stop" moulding in front of the metal. That moulding would get removed on the sides and top. Pull any nails that are left remaining in the wood. You'd then remove any screws holding the metal jambs to the wood window jamb, then you'd lower the top sash and raise the bottom sash until both of them were somewhat centered in the opening. You'd then pull in on the top of the top sash, and the metal jambs (along with the sashes) would start to come out of the window opening. You'd continue to tip them in, but hang onto the sides because the metal jambs are under spring tension. As soon as you can grasp the middle of the window (with your hands around both the metal jambs and both window sashes) you would raise up and lift the entire assembly out.

You'd need to hang onto the metal jambs on the sides... (since they are under spring tension, they will fly like rockets if you let them go suddenly) and slowly release them, letting them slide up past the sashes, taking note of how they hook onto the sash, so that you can reinstall them later.

If this seems too much for you, don't attempt it, as your windows will be pretty much worthless if they come apart and you can't get them back together again.
