Replacing doorknob

I'm having trouble removing this old doorknob in order to replace it with one that locks. It's similar to this one in these instructions I found for installation (http://www.nostalgicwarehouse.com/pd...Pvcy_PK107.pdf) and it seems like the door knobs need to be unscrewed in order to get them off. I tried this on another door knob on a different door and i just had to turn them counter clockwise and they started to unscrew. However this knob will not budge no matter how hard I twist.

Any suggestions? Should I try WD 40?

Normally there is a set screw that needs to be loosened before they will unscrew.

Yeah, i thought there might be, but as you can see from the photos the holes where I'd expect the set screws to be are empty, so there are no screws to loosen...
