I am finishing basement and am just painting drywall. Am going to order carpet soon.

I purchased the pre-hung colonial doors from the Depot.

My question is - is it best to get the doors (with trim) installed prior to carpet installation, or does it not really matter. I will try to get them up, but time may not allow.

thanks in advance

Install the doors before laying the carpet. When the carpet layers arrive, pull the hinge pins and remove the doors from their casings. (Mark which door goes in which casing.) Once the carpet is layed, rehang the doors. You may need to cut a little off of the bottom of one or two to get them to clear the carpet. Just use a straight edge to guide the saw if you need to do that.

prehung doors

prehung doors are actually designed for the do yourselfers. They should be hung after the carpet. Because all the holes are predrilled there is virtually no mess to clean up after. It's much easier for the carpetlayers, they won't have to cut around door jams, and I find that the appearance is much nicer.

Happy hangin

Hi Bugeater, well I have to totally agree with Lefty on this one you should always install the doors and frames before carpet laying, yes whilst it may be easier for the carpet fitters if the doors were not fitted the carpets look a lot neater cut in, also if in future years you want to replace the carpets they may be of a different thickness so may leave unsightly gaps on the frames at the bottom, also if the door frames include a threshold this gives a neat finish to the carpets and thresholds also allow seperate room carpets to be replaced at different times and reduces the costs in the long run as you dont have to pull the carpets up in more than one room if the carpet does go all the way through into two rooms then it would have to be cut or both rooms done at the same time......

Hammer, Pre-hung doors were developed to save time in the installation of doors in new construction. The doors are always installed before the finished flooring is installed. Hell, the finished flooring is the VERY last step of the construction! Nobody wants to deal with having to clean muddy footprints and sawdust off of the carpet (or other finished floors), especially a builder who is worrying about making a profit on a new home. Paying $200 or $300 to have brand new carpets cleaned just isn't in the budget. And if you have ever taken out an original door casing, you'll notice that it extends all the way to the subfloor.

Thanks - I went ahead and installed them now. I bought the split jambs with trim at the Depot, and in hindsight, I think a standard prehung with no trim would be better. I didn't notice when I bought them, but the trim was paint grade, so had many joints in the trim. I will probably end up prying off the outer trim and replacing with stain grade.

thanks for the help.
