change existing window that opens sideways to one that opens up & down
I have a block home with a window frame that's screwed in and surrounded with stucco. I want to install a window A/C unit in it, but it opens sideways. I'm on a small budget & have no idea how to find another window unit that will fit perfectly. Everyone wants money just to come and look and I have no idea what this will cost me. I have tools and am handy, but Have no idea what this entails and what it should cost me. Can someone help me figure out how to do this and where to find a reasonably priced window. I also don't know how to apply stucco. Thank you all.

Hi Walker,
no experience with stucco so I'll let the pros answer that. Just want to add, since I used to have side sliders, they do make vertically oriented window ac units. I built a frame to fit the opening for security, but it was easier than changing a window.

I'm a painter not a mason but I've done minor stucco repairs for my customers. Basically you just take some mortar and apply it to paint free damaged area. Matching the existing texture is probably the hardest part.
Finding the right sized window at a decent price is probably the hardest part of the job. Posting a few pics of the window and how it's attached would help us give better advice - http://www.doityourself.com/forum/el...-pictures.html

I have the A/C unit
Hi, Sorry, but I forgot to tell you I have an 18,000 BTU unit in the garage that I plan to use. I see the frame is screwed into the sides. I don't know if there's a wooden frame inside where I can't see. I really need to know the steps on how to take the window/frame out of the wall as it's surrounded with stucco. I can take pictures, but there isn't anything else to view. Is this a fairly easy process to R & R the window or can it be tricky for a lay person like me? Thanks all.
