what is wrong with this door, I think the frame is wrong, but every time you try and open the door your fingers get stuck between the knob and the frame cause as you can see from the pictures, there is almost no room between the two.

What is the problem here and how can I fix it.

Looks like the door is centered to be an in-swing door, but they used the trim as a door stop and made it an out-swing.

Curious where the hinges are mounted?

The casing is probably bigger than it needs to be but installing a lever lockset like Z suggested is the best way to go.

Maybe it used to have the kind of latch you depress with your thumb.

Hi, Someone added a big door stop to your jamb. The door stop should be the the same size as the top and other side of your door. why it was added could be the door jamb is broke you should be able to spot a patched break. Another possiblty could be too much reveal on the lactch side. The reveal should be the same all the way around the door. From your picture of the outside of the door I suspect it was installed to acomadate a screen door. It looks like an old hinge on the exterior door casing on the hinge side
