average price to install a door and frame...

Hello,

I have a quick question. To meet fire codes before selling his house, my father needs to install either a solid wood door (1 3/4" thick minimum) or a fire-rated steel door. The current door is 1 1/4" thick, so he'll have to replace the door frame.

He got a quote for $330 for the frame and steel door. Does that seem like a fair price (to remove the old door and frame and install a new one)?

Thanks,

Andy

If it includes labor it seems cheap. Is it a real steal door and frame or one of faux steel skin doors in a wood jamb usually sold at the BigBox store?

I'm familiar with this kind of job since I used to sell them for 5 yrs. Yes that is about the right price...maybe a little low but right in the range. The door itself is going to run about $125-150 depending on source and style. A true fire rated door would run over $200, but the codes in VA didn't require them, and I doubt NC does either.

When I quit selling, a typical door install was running about $180 for ext doors IIRC. That was through HD contracted installers. Prob a bit less for a handyman type.

Thanks for the info GunGuy. My father lives in Missouri, and apparently they require a steel door with a 20 minute fire rating, OR a solid wood door.

Ray, I'll need to have my father ask about that. I'm not sure what type of door they specified (but it has to be fire rated).

Ohhhh....that may be a different story. In that case it seems pretty low. I'd think $400-450 would be a closer estimate. A lot depends on labor prices in different regions and whether they will be trimming it out or just a basic install.

Odd that they want solid wood (which will burn) OR fire rated steel.

Around here they require either solid wood or steel. It's not necessarily a fire proof door but has a set time it will take for a fire to go thru. It takes longer to burn thru solid wood versus hollow core.
