how to remove old tape from windows

I'm rehabbing an old house where someone at some point in time has used that god awful brown packing tape to seal up the gaps on the inside and outside of the windows. Over time it's gotten pretty old and crumbly, so if you try and pull it off about half an inch comes up and then just breaks away. My best guess is to go out and buy a heat gun (or steal my wife's hair dryer from home!) and see if that works. Do I hear a seconding on that, or does someone want to come in with a counter offer on an alternative method?

Heat gun sounds like a good start to me.

Yeah, I hope it curls up and scrapes off easily, because there's an absolute ton of it inside and out. I think the person who laid it on wanted to be a latter day bubble boy living in a perfectly sealed cocoon!
