Can door built for 2x6 wall be installed in 2x4 wall?

I need to replace a 9' patio door and I found a great deal on a 3 panel hinged door......but it is set up for a 2x6 wall.....and mine are 2 x 4 - I know I could make a 2x4 jamb work on 2x6 walls but I am not sure about the other way around. It is an outswing door leading to a deck and it is the only opening on that side of the house and it is protected by about a 3' soffit. If I try to make it work - what complications (or glaring impossibilities) am I likely to encounter? Thanks!

Welcome to the forums!

The biggest issue would be cutting the jamb down neatly to fit.

Hi, Maybe too late. I have run into this before.Find the difference between the wall and the jamb say 1 1/2 inches. Decide if you want the door flush on the inside or outside. Install the door than take a
2x4 or 2x6 and frame up the part that exteds. The edge of the door should be flush with the face of the 2x4 or 6. Install door casing to brige the jamb to the 2x.
