Need Advice/Help on Installing Door
Please bear with me as I'm unsure of the correct terminology.
I need to install a door in a doorway that has everything except the door stops, hinges, and the striker plate installed. For the time being, I can probably do without installing the striker plate and even the stops, but I need the door installed ASAP. Unfortunately, I can't afford to hire someone and my father is not reliable, so I may end up having to do this myself.
My main problem is that I'm not sure what type of door to get. It's my understanding that if I buy a slab, I will have to paint it (and other things) and it may need to be trimmed. I'd prefer not to have to do any of that.
If I buy a prehung door, it's my understanding that it will come with unnecessary things for my setup which will cost me more. I've heard they come with door stops, so that would be good. I'm confused as to whether they're already finished, painted, or primed. But I keep reading about how they must be sealed/finished on all six sides, I don't even know what that means.
I think I can install/hang a door myself, but it may take a long time and I may put an extra unnecessary hole or two in the door frame from miscalculation. After that I would need to install the door stops, and I know nothing about that. If push comes to shove, I can always rig something up for a couple months (that's how long I need the door installed).
So, I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what I should be looking to buy in a door and what I need to do? I do know that I'll need a door measuring 36"x80" and is white.
I see a nice prehung door on Home Depot's website. It's a split jamb and it needs to be finished on all six sides and is primed and ready to paint. I'm not sure that's what I want. Post a photo of the passage way where the door will be installed.
Give us the width and height measurements of the opening.

In your case a prehung door is what you need.
By the sounds of your lack of experience it's going to be a challenge.
Going to need a 38 X at least 6'9" rough open to set the door in.
Any door you buy is going to need to be painted.
Sounds like your trying to install a door in a preexisting open that just has 1X's as trim now.
All that has to come out to fit the door.
Really need that picture so we can see what your seeing.
