Removing glazing from glass

After taking glass out of some old double hung windows, there's some glazing that is stuck on edges of the glass (about 1/8th of an inch wide) that's a pain to scrape off. Is there anything I can soak the glass in for a few days that will take it off?

So you are reusing the glass ??

While I've installed a good bit of glass and reglazed them over the years I don't think I've ever took glass out and then reused it. Might try some paint thinner and see how that does, maybe something stronger like lacquer thinner or MEK.

Acetone works fairly well. If you have paints stripper you could also try that.

Yeah, I'm reusing the old ripple glass. I have a steam box that make getting the glass out pretty easy, but doesn't get the inside edge very well. Will try paint stripper since I have some on hand.

Use a heat gun. It will soften the glazing enough to remove with a putty knife. Just don't concentrate the heat too much or you'll end up having to paint the frames.

Too much heat on one spot can also crack the glass so if you use a heat gun, don't get too close to the glass and don't sit in one spot, keep it moving.

. Is the edge on the face of the glass or on the thickness? If it's on the thickness, you might try some very coarse sandpaper. Old "putty" dries like a rock and I doubt if you can soften it.

It's on the face of the glass

I've had to remove some pretty old and crusted on glazing from windows that I thought would never come off. But the heat gun softened it just enough to use a knife to gouge it out. But like Xsleeper says, be careful with the heat so as not to break the glass. If the glass is already under stress it may break no matter what. I've found old glass to be brittle and will chip at the edges.

I didn't try a heat gun since I'm worried about breaking the glass. Paint stripper plus a sharp razor blade seemed to work pretty well. Thanks for all the tips!
