Fixed Pane Window Cracked - Options?

Hi Guys,

I have the thermastar 54x28" single hung windows. A rock or the neighbors kid and his bb gun decided to put a hole in the outer pane. It's single hung window, and it's not the section of the window that swings in or out...it's the fixed upper section.

What are my options for a quick fix? Hoping I don't have to replace the whole window!

TIA

Is it single or double pane? I can't imagine that there would be any invisible fix other than replacement.

That's what i was afraid of. It's the double pane with argon between the panes. Does that mean I have to tear out the entire window since it's a vinyl window with the fins that attach it to the house?

No just the IGU [insulated glass] will need to be replaced. The stops are removed and then the glass is removed/replaced. Most any glass shop can order a new IGU if you provide the measurements [or they can come out and do it] You don't need to replace the whole unit.

Phew! Thanks! That makes me feel a lot better since the windows are only a few months old!

You might be able get some relief.

If you search, you might be able to find a name or number so that you can look into any guarantees available from the manufacturer.

If you feel you must replace the IGU unit, take the height and width of the unit or maybe the size of the glazed are. Also measure the thickness of the IGU.

If you have no success, call local residential glass installer. I had a clouded IGU on a sliding door that had to be replaced. Fortunately I had the dimensions when I call to schedule an estimate. The salesman/installer had a truck with a number of door and window IGUs. And one happened to be the right size, despite being a 30 year old door (brand unknown). About 15 minutes later, I had a new IGU installed about a day before a December blizzard, even though I might have paid a few dollars more by shopping around and taken the trouble and liability of having something made. - The storm was not the reason for the new IGU done immediately, but I did not want to leave an open hole in the water at that time after trying to determine the exact size of the IGU.
