Rough Door Opening

What size opening do I need for a 34x80 door that is not prehung just a door with hinges no frame?

Are you mortising the hinges? If so 34 1/4 x 80 1/4. Hope it is an interior door.

Depending on the type of flooring you'll probably want/need more height.

Hope you are making the frame, not putting it into an existing one... made me worried when you said "no frame", since it also depends if the existing opening is plumb, level and square too. As Larry mentioned, in a perfect world, 1/8" around the sides and top of the door is ideal.... more space is usually needed on bottom, however.

Rough stud opening for a door with a frame would be 36x82. If you plan to just hang the door on the studs without a frame, 34 1/4" x 81. Your rough stud frame would need to be perfectly stright and plumb to hang a door on it though. Much easier to make a frame for the door and shim it into an opening.
