Curious if this would hold up for exterior use or if there was something comparable?

Hi, I'm sort of new to this DIY thing. I painted one wall of my kitchen that doesn't have anything other than an electrical outlet on it. I'm going to be doing a board and batten on that wall. I'm planning on continuing the paint and board/batten around to the wall it touches. That wall has a sliding glass door in it. Also, the walls in my house are plaster. The sliding glass door of course has a casing around it. My question is, can I just remove the casing and not have anything around the door at all? Or is that a really bad idea? I am a little afraid it'll have this really noticeable gap between the door and the wall what with it being plaster and not drywall. Should I just leave the casing and paint to match the board/batten? Any and all thoughts are appreciated.
