Anyone here familiar with Central FL window replacement requirements?
Live in Daytona Beach and I am thinking about replacing my windows on my own. Not particularly 'handy' by any means but I like to learn to do things myself. Broke a window last week and wasn't much of a problem to replace.
My thought now is why not replace every window in the house? They're original since 1985 might as well. I'm in Volusia County in case anyone happens to be familiar with the area.
My understanding is that if you are inside of a defined Windborne Debris region you either need impact resistant windows, or a shutter system, but I think I am just barely outside the Windborne Debris Region (according to the map - also more than 1 mile from the mean high tide line) so I should pretty well be able to install any window I like right?
I realize I am going to have to permit this with the city, but what is the real purpose of permitting if there are no special requirements of the windborne debris region?
I can purchase any windows I want? And what should I be ready for with the city?

Need to be talking to the local zoning department on what's required.
Can you post of the windows you have now?

Your permit office will let you know what is required. Is it a block or wood framed house?
btw - I used to live in east orange county, not that it gives me any special qualifications to answer your question.

I used to live in east orange county. I moved to east tenn 25 yrs ago.
Don't really know about replacing windows on a block house but originally they are attached to PT wood that is secured to the block opening. If the block is just painted there will be butyl caulk filling the gap between the block and the window frame unless stucco was used. I assume the inside has a drywall return caulked to the window frame with either a marble or tile sill/stool.
Hammer and chisel is probably the best method to remove stucco. Fortunately replacing the stucco isn't that difficult.
