Need help removing Alcoa double-hung window sash

A couple days ago one of the glass panes in the bottom half of our double-hung window smashed. I need to remove the window sash to take it in for repairs, but I'm having no luck with the removal. According to various websites, the way to remove it is to lift the window a bit, unlatch it from the top and swing it open until it's parallel to the floor, then simply pull up on one side to unhinge. Mine won't budge at all when I do the last step.

Any other tips or recommendations? If pics would help let me know. It's an Alcoa window, most likely from the late 90's.

Thanks in advance!

Raise the window halfway, then tip the sash down 90 degrees like you are going to wash it. Then take a pic of the pivot point on each side and post it here.

I'll get better pics tomorrow when it's light out, but here's a start (I use dropbox, so hopefully it shows up OK)

You have what's called spiral balances, I believe... although it's hard to see them in the pictures. I was hoping for a closeup shot.

They are a little difficult to remove... lay the window flat like you have it in the picture. Grasp the left side of the sash with your left hand. Grasp the right side of the sash with your right hand. (Wear gloves, and put your hands as close to the bottom of the sash - nearest the pivot points- as possible.) Lift up on the right side while pushing down SLIGHTLY with the left. It will take some effort but it will move. Do this carefully, slowly, don't jerk the window... just steady upward pressure on the right side will get it to move.

Once you get it to move, the window will tip up on the right side, enough to slip out of the pivot shoe. When it does, slide the sash to the right so the left side will slip out of its pivot shoe.

Installation is the reverse procedure.

Gave this a try and unfortunately no luck. When I lifted up on the right, the entire vertical spiral balance lifted as well. Was this supposed to happen at first? I didn't want to go too much further than an inch or so, in fear that I couldn't get it back down.

Here's a couple more closer photos, for what it's worth. The vertical portion is spiral shaped (covered by the white plastic).

Try opening the window just an inch or two, tip it down 90 degrees, then follow my directions. You will need to keep lifting on the right side until the pivots can come out of the shoes. Yes, the spiral turns as you lift it.
