Trying To Find U Shaped Door Sweeps To Fit A 1 1/2" Thick Exterior Door

I am trying to help a good friend replace the door sweeps on her swing out exterior french doors which are high quality but older.

The current sweeps are U shaped where the bottom fingers rub against and seal on the threshold and the exterior part of the sweep has a 3/4" to 1" long lip that overlaps the front edge of the threshold to prevent water from entering underneath the door. The primary reason for replacing the sweep is the lip is discolored , cracked and missing some sections of it.

The problem is that her doors are 1 1/2" thick not the typical current standard of 1 3/4" and I have searched everywhere with no luck in finding some to fit her doors.

If I can not find identical replacement U shaped sweeps to fit her doors I will probably cut the lip off flush with the outside door edge and a screw on vertical door sweep which I would prefer not to do because of aesthetics.

Does anyone know a manufacturer or company that offers U shaped sweeps to fit a 1 1/2" exterior door?

Thank you

A search online turned up 1 1/2" door sweeps at the major big box home centers. Many of them are sold for storm doors which can be 1 1/2" thick.

Pilot Dane,

None of my searches turned up a 1 1/2" U shaped door sweep for any type of door and I did a lot of searching.

Are you permitted to tell me where you found them?

Thank you

Hmm...I was ready to jump all over the OP for not looking carefully enough. But I agree, I can't find 1 1/2 "u" shape door sweep.

PD the ball is your court. Show us.

Use a 1 3/4 inch sweep and add a 1/4 inch strip of wood as filler inside to make up the difference. The width of the strip should be the same as the depth (top to bottom) of the sweep. A 45 degree cut or a 1/4 inch quarter round along the top edge would provide a more finished look.

A large paint stick may fit perfectly.

This is a reasonable idea and one that I was considering as well. I'll take a closer look at the inside surface of the doors to see if this will work if I can't find a factory made U shaped sweep for a 1 1/2" door.

Thank you for your suggestion.

Pilot Dane,

I'm not sure if a adjustable vinyl sweep without a "drip cap" will work as a replacement for the existing white rigid aluminum one that has a built in drip cap.

At this point, if I cannot find a exact replacement, I'm leaning toward using the approach 2john02458 suggested.

Please let me know if you found any other door sweeps that fit a 1 1/2" door.

Thank you for your input, I appreciate it.

I searched for "1 1/2" thick door sweep" and found numerous options in both vinyl and aluminum including items stocked at the major home centers. Below is another vendor that has them in aluminum.

Expander, 1-1/2 inch 2 Sweeps. 35-1/16 Length - Satin Nickel

Thanks Pilot Dane for your information on door sweeps.

Apparently I was not looking in all the right places.

In any case, I'm going to visit with my friend and discuss the possible options to see which direction we will take. Since the back of her house has 2 sets of french doors and one set of siding doors that are all white, any sweep that's not white will probably not be an option.

Many thanks for everyone's help.
