Exterior Doorknob care

Seeking recommendations on how best to weather seal exterior doorknobs. I have three-year-old doorknobs that have become so chipped up and are peeling, presumably due to weather because the issue is only on the exterior side. I believe they are satin nickel. I'm actually likely to just purchase new knobs and am wondering if it is ok to spray Rustoleum on them prior to installing. Or Is there another recommended way to prevent weather damage on knobs?

Also curious if brand has anything to do with it. The installer used Defiant brand knobs, which I've read is not a strong brand. I'm likely to purchase a Kwikset or Schlage.

No, I wouldn't spray anything on them, and yes, the brand has everything to do with it. Just read the finish warranty on the box. Weiser has one of the best finish warranties of all the residential sets.

Is it the actual metal that is peeling?
Or is it just the coating that they apply over the metal to protect it?

If it is just the coating then what I did was remove it using a fine rubbing compound so as not to scratch the metal.
And then a coat of car wax. Have to rewax them once a year or so.

Mine are Weiser on a south facing door without a storm door and heavy usage.
The coating lasted for about 3 to 4 years then started to peel, discolor etc,

Note that I did not even contact Weiser about the warranty.
I did the above 3 years ago and so far it is working.

I have the same set on a north facing door with a storm door little usage and they still look like new.

If you switched them to Schlage brand knobs nothing would be needed to protect the finish.
Those Defiant brand knobs are trash, I have one a shed door that hardly ever get used and all the finish has failed.
Kwickset is also a cheap builders grade knob.
