Cat Door for Interior Hollow 6 Panel Door

We'd like to do an attractive cut out at the bottom of the 6 panel door going into our laundry room so our cat can access his litter box.

We believe the door is hollow, and we don't believe it's made of wood. It's whatever the doors are made of that you see at local home improvement big box stores.

We've never cut into a door like this. Will the door "splinter"?

We're probably going to have to cut so that part of the bottom two panels of the six will be cut into a little bit to make the opening big enough for the cat.

Any ideas or suggestions to make this as easy as possible? Any ideas on how to make it look attractive?

Thank You!

Any cut in a 6 panel door will not be very attractive. Your flat pet door trim will not conform to the shape of the raised panels. Any opening cut in the door should really follow one or both of the panel edges exactly. And yes, if the door is hollow you have to leave the perimeter of the door intact. Google 6 panel pet door, then click on images. There are a few products made specifically for 6 panel doors and pets.

Are you thinking of something like this when you speak of leaving the perimeter intact?:

What about this one? Would this cover up the "raw edges" that would happen when cutting that type of material? Would the hollow core still be a problem with this type of product?

Would I do better to just cut the bottom of the door straight off? Would we just put a piece of molding on the bottom of the door?

Thanks for the help.

Those are very cute, looks like the reviews are good. I would imagine it would weaken a hollow door but some of the reviews suggest it works fine, so it's really up to you. It's a lot better than a giant panel.

Just installed a cat door (29.99) one in a panel door but mine has window in it. Found out panels were made out of some type press board. Just follow the template they send with door and you will be ok. I took out flap till cat gets used to door. Will be installing soon.
